FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty-seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose Post Falls Music Academy as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from pop, blue grass, folk, jazz, country, blues and classical.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
Our teachers have received their education from prestigious institutions such as Rice University, Texas Tech University, Eastern Washington University, Russian School of Art, and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Many of our instructors have gone on performance tours of the US and Europe and have over 25 years of professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level.
GUITAR LESSONS
(for ages 5 and up)
Our guitar teachers teach using many different methods including classical, rock, blues, and country guitar lessons on classic, electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can expect to work on classical fingerings, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar method books to accomplish this and encourage students to bring CDs or their iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.
PIANO LESSONS
(for ages 4 and up)
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first year. Our piano teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.
Violin Lessons
(for ages 4 and up)
We have 2 options for beginners: the group class or private lessons. You will learn Suzuki classical repertoire as well as some fiddle tunes. Our violin teachers will show you the fundamentals of reading music, bowing technique, and theory. You will need to purchase or rent the appropriate size violin for your size.
Clarinet Lessons
(ages 7 and up)
Students taking clarinet lessons will learn everything about the clarinet including: note reading, tone production, how to care for reeds, technique, instrument care, and tonguing. Several playing styles are taught such as classical, jazz, and big band.
Flute Lessons
(ages 7 and up)
Our flute lessons are a great way to get ahead for the school band. We use the Suzuki method and students begin playing on their flute immediately. We emphasize good tone production and students will enjoy the beauty of the flute sound as they play melodic classical and jazz pieces.

Recommended for young children, teens and adults.
For piano students, you will need to purchase an instrument for your child to practice on at home. Ideally, this would be a real, acoustic piano, be it upright or grand. If you cannot purchase one, you may rent one monthly. If you cannot do that, then the next option would be to purchase the same keyboard your child uses in the class. With this option, you will also need a keyboard stand and bench. These can be purchased from the instructor.
Other than that, you will need a cd player to play the music cd, and a small ball ( like a tennis ball) to practice at home with.
For violin students, the first few weeks will not involve an instrument of any kind. After that, we use a "practice" instrument that the instructor provides on loan. After a few weeks with the practice instrument, when the students are ready, the instructor will measure each student and request the appropriate size violin. You may purchase the violin on your own, or you can purchase the violin directly from the teacher. You may plan to spend about $100 total for a new violin, bow, and case. You may also rent your violin from us for around $10 per month. Your child will be able to use this violin for 1-2 years. Afterward, they will "outgrow" it and will need to upgrade to a bigger size. Usually, the small one can be resold. Besides that, the only other thing is to have a decent music stand at home for the child to place their music on. Something solid, not too flimsy. You can check your local music stores for this.
Clarinet students will need to purchase or rent their clarinets. They will need a standard Bb Clarinet for age 9 and up, preferably wood and not plastic if you can afford it. Younger students will need a smaller clarinet that will be recommended by the teacher. You will also need to purchase a new mouthpiece for your child. The ones that come with the clarinet are usually of poor quality and can severely impact the student's ability to produce a good tone. Also need is a box of 10 reeds, preferably Vandoren brand, start at strength #2. You might need to purchase an additional swab, the cloth with a cord attached to "swab" out the moisture from the inside of the clarinet after each use. Make sure this is made of cotton or silk, and NOT one of those fuzzy, felt types that can leave those fuzzy bits all inside the clarinet.
Each student will get a detailed page of all these materials needed for their instrument.
